Alternatives

# CADMAPPER Alternatives: 5 Providers for CAD City Maps Compared

There are five alternatives to CADMAPPER for CAD city maps: swzpln.de generates figure-ground plans free of charge as SVG, PDF and DXF; CAD Atlas delivers 2D and 3D in DWG, DXF, SKP and 3DM with the first square kilometre free; schwarzplan.eu (335 cities) and figuregrounds.com (over 200 cities) sell finished, layered plans for €10 and €9.50 respectively; and mapacad.com offers 437 cities as DWG from €1.

Starting point

## Why look for a CADMAPPER alternative?

CADMAPPER is the best-known name in the category, and for good reasons: any extract on the world map, up to 1 km² free, worldwide coverage, building heights and topography, plus over 200 complete metropolitan street networks without signing up. For many tasks it is the right choice and stays the right choice.

There are three verifiable reasons to look around anyway – all three follow from what the service states itself.

01### Paid above 1 km² – with no price stated

The free extract stops at 1 km² and requires an account. For up to 100 km² CADMAPPER only says „a small fee" and names no amount; if you have to budget in advance, you cannot.

02### The export is a raw data extract

A generator delivers geometry, not a finished plan. Sorting layers, deciding the presentation, setting the scale and the sheet layout all remain work on your own machine. If you need a print-ready figure-ground plan, buying one is faster than preparing it.

03### ODbL obligations travel with the file

According to its terms, CADMAPPER places the files under the ODbL. Commercial use is permitted, but requires attribution and share-alike. If you would rather not carry that into a client project, you need a provider with its own licence.

Choosing well

## What matters when choosing

### Data source

Almost everything in this category is based on OpenStreetMap. The data is collected collaboratively and its completeness varies by region – that applies to generators and to purchased plans alike, ours included.

### Preparation

Raw export or finished plan? Closed building polygons, named layers and a fixed scale are the difference between an hour of rework and none.

### License

ODbL with attribution and share-alike for raw exports, an own licence at curated shops. For commercial projects this is the most important point.

### Extract

A generator can do any spot on earth, a catalogue only the cities it holds. Conversely, a catalogue plan is ready in two minutes.

Profiles

## The 5 alternatives

### schwarzplan.eu

Curated shop, instant download

Usually €10 per single plan; 40 plans free

[ To the catalogue → ](https://schwarzplan.eu/en/site-plan-figure-ground-plan-shop/)

Finished, already cleaned figure-ground and site plans: closed building polygons, separate layers, a fixed scale, downloadable straight away as PDF, DWG or DXF. The commercial licence comes with the purchase, so no ODbL share-alike obligation attaches to your own drawing. The honest limitation: this is a curated catalogue, not a generator – if you need an exact custom extract at an arbitrary location, CADMAPPER, CAD Atlas or swzpln.de will serve you better. We are the only provider in this overview that additionally supplies German cadastral maps built from official land registry data rather than OpenStreetMap.

### swzpln.de

Free generator, open source

Free

[ swzpln.de ↗ ](https://swzpln.de/)

The most obvious free alternative, and often entirely sufficient for coursework and quick design sketches: any extract, export as SVG, PDF and DXF, plus IFC, OBJ and 3D DXF for three-dimensional models, with no price and no account. The plan is generated client-side in the browser from OpenStreetMap data, and the source code is on GitHub under AGPL-3.0. The map data remains OpenStreetMap data under the ODbL – attribution is mandatory for commercial reuse, and nobody prepares the drawing for print for you.

### CAD Atlas

Generator, 2D and 3D

First ~1 km² free without signing up, free for students; beyond that per km² – amount n/a

[ CAD Atlas ↗ ](https://cad-atlas.com/)

The generator with the widest format list and the strongest 3D offering: DWG, DXF, SKP, 3DM, 3DS, OBJ and MTL, with real building heights, street widths instead of centrelines and editable vector shadows. The first square kilometre is free without signing up, and students get free access after verifying their university address. Besides OpenStreetMap, CAD Atlas also uses Overture Maps, government cadastral records and elevation models. Its licence page declares the deliveries ODbL 1.0 works with share-alike. The site states no price per square kilometre – hence „n/a".

### mapacad.com

Curated shop

€1 to €15 per city (Berlin, London, Paris, Rome, Athens: €15); 3D models €20

[ mapacad.com ↗ ](https://www.mapacad.com/)

The broadest catalogue in this overview: 437 cities as DWG, priced from €1 to €15 by city size. For smaller cities mapacad is therefore cheaper than we are; for Berlin, London, Paris, Rome or Athens a plan costs €15 there against €10 with us. The provider states itself that the plans contain no topography and, because different coordinate systems are used, are not delivered at a fixed scale – you set scale and units in CAD yourself. Its FAQ names OpenStreetMap as the data source and sells the files under the OpenStreetMap licence; reselling the files is prohibited.

### figuregrounds.com

Curated shop

€9.50 per plan

[ figuregrounds.com ↗ ](https://www.figuregrounds.com/)

The offering closest to ours: over 200 curated cities, €9.50 each for a ZIP containing DWG and a scalable PDF, with switchable layers for buildings, streets, railway, land use and water. The provider names OpenStreetMap as its sole data source and explicitly permits use in „commercial or private projects". The catalogue is built around figure-ground drawings; if you need a different city or a different extract, you will find it there as little as with us.

Comparison

## The alternatives and CADMAPPER side by side

The last row is CADMAPPER itself – without it the actual question, whether switching is worth it at all, could not be answered.

Every figure about a third-party provider was read from that provider's own site on 24. August 2026: prices, formats, coverage, data source and licence. Where a provider states no amount or no licence, the cell reads „n/a" – estimated values are not used here. Prices can change at any time; the provider's own site is always authoritative.

Several plans

Every provider above sells individual cities or extracts. If you need several plans, you pay €5 less from three plans and €10 less from four with us; whole countries are available as fixed-price packages – Germany costs 39,00 € for 134 plans, which is 0,29 € per plan, paid once and accessible permanently. The full tier list and all packages are in the [Provider comparison](https://schwarzplan.eu/en/city-map-cad-providers/).

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions about CADMAPPER alternatives

### Is there a free CADMAPPER alternative?

Yes. **swzpln.de** is entirely free, open source (AGPL-3.0) and needs no account; the plan is generated in the browser from OpenStreetMap data and exported as SVG, PDF or DXF. At **CAD Atlas** the first square kilometre is free without signing up, and students get free access after verifying their university address. Free plans are available from us as well.

### Which CADMAPPER alternative delivers DWG instead of DXF?

**schwarzplan.eu** (DWG, DXF and vector PDF), **figuregrounds.com** (DWG plus PDF), **mapacad.com** (DWG) and **CAD Atlas** (DWG, DXF, SKP, 3DM, 3DS, OBJ). CADMAPPER itself exports DXF, SKP, 3DM and 3DS, but no DWG.

### Which alternative uses official data instead of OpenStreetMap?

For Germany, our cadastral map: it comes from the land registry and shows official parcel boundaries instead of OpenStreetMap geometries. CAD Atlas names government cadastral records as one of its sources alongside OpenStreetMap. Every other provider in this overview works with OpenStreetMap.

### What does CADMAPPER cost beyond the free area?

For areas up to 100 km² CADMAPPER only says „a small fee" and publishes no amount; a discount for academic email addresses is announced. We therefore deliberately state no figure here – only the provider's own site is authoritative.

### When should I stay with CADMAPPER?

When the free extract of up to 1 km² is enough, when your workflow runs through SKP, 3DM or 3DS anyway, or when you need an extract at a location no curated catalogue covers. The 200-plus free metropolitan street networks are also available there without signing up.
